But I think older teenagers have no problem with it, and from an evolutionary standpoint, this is the time in a woman's life when we're youngest, healthiest and most ready to reproduce. There's a reason why the average age of marriage was 14 back in the 16th century. I feel like the older you are, the harder it gets, and we certainly see older women's pregnancies fraught with difficulty and complication, such as increased rates of diabetes, chronic hypertension, preeclampsia etc. etc. I think it’s damaging for really young girls, especially those who are not fully developed yet, to be pregnant. We forget, sometimes, that teenager’s bodies are meant to give birth, and probably more so at this age than at any other time in their lives. Even though they might not be emotionally ready, their bodies are, and they often open up through labor as if it were the easiest and most natural thing in the world.

This is fascinating! I didn’t know that, in fact, I’ve been told that it’s actually damaging to young girls to have babies. What is it that makes them so well suited to birth?
